Josh Hernandez- Business Development Manager: Bringing Over 37 Years of Combined Experience in the Private Security Industry

Security Guard Group Limited was established in 2018 at our first office location in London, Ontario. Although we are a young company, we bring over 37 years of combined experience in the Private Security Industry within our management team.

Our management has an extensive background in physical security, retail loss prevention and private investigations. Since our establishment, our personnel is fully bonded and insured to twice the standard set by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Tell us about yourself?

My personal background has always been in sales, as a young kid at the age of 15, I started out in men’s retail and gained lots of transferable skills I still use today. I worked up my way to store manager and was named the youngest manager in company history. Then had a completely different career change that lead me to work in the healthcare industry.

I have 7 years experience working with the Pediatric Oncology team at Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, as a Pediatric Oncology Support Worker. What lead me to Security Guard Group Limited was my passion for sales and connecting with people on a business level.

The fact that I can provide them a service that I stand behind and would use myself for my own businesses, makes me satisfied when finalising a contract with someone. Although I am fairly new to the team, I see myself fitting in just right and can confidently say my work and experience will become my own asset.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

If I had a personal time machine, would definitely go back two years and attempt to stop the world pandemic! The covid-19 pandemic has brought the whole world to a stop and has left many to face issues they never could have imagined. Simple times that we took for granted will forever be a memory, although I like to stay positive and look towards a brighter future.

What problem does your business solve?

We solve and manage commercial and residential security issues, problem or risks. We work one on one with every single new client and tailor and customise each security program to the required specific needs.

With the pandemic we are currently facing, unfortunately crime and criminal activity has been on the rise.

This is a a major problem for businesses with a already limited income due to covid-19 restrictions. Security Guard Group Limited steps in and offers a stress-free security program that targets these issues and lets business owners have a piece of mind to focus on more important matters.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

The inspiration behind Security Guard Group Limited comes from a group of professionals that have a combined experience of 37 years in the industry. As any employee of the security service sector knows, there is always room for improvement and ways to make the job more efficient not only for the client but for the business as well.

This alone is what led the formation of the company to commence. Having the knowledge and experience to build and offer clients a better security program while positively changing certain negative industry standards. This can be directly shown in the pride of all our employees when working with our clients.

What is your magic sauce?

We have taken E-learning to a whole new level by partnering with TalentLMS. We developed our own security courses in-house to meet specific industry needs. As such, our construction security guards are trained to perform construction related security duties, healthcare security on healthcare related security matters and loss prevention on retail related matters.

We do not just give general training, we tailor them to meet our clients’ specific needs; our guards receive industry specific certifications which are shared with our clients for transparency.

It is important to note that E-learning is just a part of our training methodology, we also provide up to 200 hours of on-site training depending on the industry.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

Simply put the vision for the next 5 years is to be recognised as the primary Security Service Company in Ontario. We want to achieve this by letting our work speak for itself via our customers.

We want to show that we are different from our competition in the sense of our work ethics and vigorous constant training on industry standards.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

The biggest challenge we have faced so far is having to deal with certain industry stereotypes, that other companies have left behind.

When I say I truly stand behind this company and say it differentiates from the rest, I really mean it. There are certain stereotypes within the industry that are very hard to overcome when dealing with new clients.

These clients not only paint all companies with the same brush but can sometimes be unwilling to look past a negative experience another company has left behind. We are mostly successful in overcoming this challenge by incorporating and demonstrating the skills and knowledge that set us apart.
