Tell us about yourself?

Growing up, I was interested in entrepreneurship but didn’t exactly know what kind of business I wanted to create. While I was studying finance and marketing at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, I realized I wasn’t particularly suited for the finance industry. Meanwhile, I developed a burgeoning interest in marketing. While I was working as a Research Assistant for a marketing professor at SFU Beedie School of Business, I used social media platforms such as YouTube and Twitter to conduct consumer research. There and then, I became fascinated with digital platforms and digital marketing.

Also while I was in school, I attended a business event where I got the chance to learn from members of reputable creative and digital agencies. I became captivated by advertising and dreamed of having an ad agency of my own. After working in two digital agencies, I decided the time was right to make my dreams a reality. I started RW Digital in 2019.

If you could go back in time a year or two, what piece of advice would you give yourself?

Develop a team. In the first and second year of business (I’m entering year three in a few months), I did almost all the work myself. Thinking back now, it wasn’t a good use of my time or skill set. My core skills are in data analytics, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads, and SEO. I have some graphic design skills and some experience in social media marketing, but they aren’t my strengths. I was doing graphic design and social media marketing to be more economical, but I was not achieving optimal results based on the resources and time investment. I have developed a small team now to take on content and design tasks so I can focus on my strengths and on developing the business.

What problem does your business solve?

Working in-house as a Digital Marketing Manager at an automotive group gave me a first-hand view of how challenges happen at the retail level, how marketing as a whole plays in the entire business dynamic, and how different digital marketing initiatives drive sales for a business. This experience is what enables me to execute different strategies for a variety of business needs with confidence.

What is the inspiration behind your business?

I want to do good work for clients and want to establish ourselves as a technical and trustworthy digital agency in the industry. It’s also important to me that my team members feel fulfilled and appreciated for the exceptional work that they deliver.

What is your magic sauce?

Continuous learning and humility. I always want to keep learning from others.

What is the plan for the next 5 years? What do you want to achieve?

We plan to continue expanding our impact by working with global brands and by offering even more technical digital marketing services such as text analytics or sentiment analysis. These services will help brands gain a deeper understanding of their audience, bringing new depth and impact to their marketing strategies.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?

Building a strong brand and expanding our brand awareness. Being a young company, making a name for ourselves remains one of our most important business objectives. The more businesses that know about our good work, the more clients we will win.

How do people get involved/buy into your vision?

Trust and clarity. I don’t over promise and I make it clear that the agency’s mission is to deliver exceptional work and tangible positive results. I also let my team know that the projects we work on are meaningful and are positive for our team members’ individual personal and career growth.
